About Us - Our Story
All about finding Poppie and our eleven
Although I didn't know it at the time, my association with dog allergy symptoms started a few months later when quite out of the blue Poppie had a series of setbacks. The first sign I picked up on was that she started passing watery faeces.
A few years ago I spend some time in Tehran and one of the local remedies for upset tummies was boiled white rice. I tried this with Poppie and within 24hrs she had bounced back as large as life again.
Then a couple of weeks later it happened again, and soon after that, again, and again. It was obvious that Poppie had something far more serious than just a tummy bug
Tests for Dog Allergy Symptoms
My vet ordered blood and faeces tests and both came back within the "normal range", yet Poppie was beginning to look very much worse for wear. Her little bones were beginning to stick out and her coat had reverted to being dull and lifeless. The only thing that didn’t change was her wonderful loving nature.
The vet looked for obvious signs of any dog allergy symptoms and there were none. Soon Poppie was beginning to look like one of those rescue dogs on TV and to make matters worse she was beginning to pass blood.
Then, one afternoon on the way home from a very slow walk Poppie collapsed. I thought she was dying. I gathered her up, ran home, bundled her into the car and dashed to our vet. On the way over I was thinking seriously of having her put to sleep, rather than watch her suffer any more.
In my panic I hadn’t made an appointment and while I was talking with the receptionist Poppie passed a motion that looked like dark red blood and black clots which really got the attention of a vet quickly.
As it turned out the vet was a very obliging young locum. He listened to Poppie's tummy and said he thought she had an inflamed colon. He then went on to explain to me that it is possible for some dogs to be allergic to protein found in some meat varieties and certain dairy foods. At this point I was able to confirm Poppie loved milk and anything with cheese in it.
At the time Poppie's future looked extremely bleak, but she perked up after the very kind donation of blood from a donor dog and some IV fluids. After a couple of days on intravenous steroids she was a new dog and I was able to take one hungry girl home, armed with the knowledge that dogs can be allergic to foods just like humans.
It was then that I decided come hell or high water I had to address Poppie's dog allergy symptoms to food otherwise she wouldn't have a future.
Allergies to Protein - Dog Allergy Symptoms
As allergies to protein in meat or milk products were probably the cause of Poppie's allergies I thought I would try her on fish. I looked in my cupboard and spotted a tin of tuna and that with some boiled rice was her first meal at home.
I started slowly with a spoonful of each and waited, there was no quiet whining, no pacing and no traveling through her tummy at the speed of light. After a couple of weeks, I had my happy, mischievous Poppie back again.
I now had to consider a permanent new diet for Poppie and it became very much a labour of trial and error. After researching on the Internet I found quite a few sites offering a variety of foods for dogs with allergies. The best one I came up with was Only Natural, which you can check out here by clicking allergy free dog foods.
It was around about this time that I realised I hadn't been able to locate one specific website that addressed all dog allergy symptoms in any great detail - only bits here and bits there.
This lead me to creating a site all about dog allergies, which is intended to be a one stop reference site for owners with dogs suffering from allergies. If the information I have written saves just one dog from the misery that Poppie went through until I was able to help her, then I will have achieved what I set out to do.

A special tip from Carole -
I have used Rescue Remedy (shown below) for the past 24 years (actually, lets be specific - I have used it for my darling doggie Poppie and her predecessors) and found it absolutely marvelous! If you need to calm your pet down at any time, give it a go, you won't regret it (Poppie usually uses it before her bath time). Each bottle lasts her for ages!
